Originally conceived as an outswing, maple door, MEH suggested an alternative that didn’t break the horizontal visual plane of the paneled wall.

An engineering effort was required to specify the 4 Soss invisible hinges required to support the extremely heavy stave core door. Given the hinges would be pulling the door tight to the lap joint with no visible gap, the cedar cladding required extensive reinforcement especially considering it is a soft wood.

As the hidden door is actually just one piece of the overall cedar wall that wraps to the outside, master carpenters spent 3 weeks executing this particular wall. Great patience was required to ensure the treatment aligned with the existing wall and existing floor as is typical in working around the challenges of an existing home.
